A federal prosecutor charged with traveling from Florida to Michigan to have sex with a 5-year-old girl committed suicide on Friday in prison, his lawyer said.

The prosecutor, J. D. Roy Atchison, 53, was arrested on Sept. 16 leaving a plane in Detroit as part of an Internet sting operation led by the sheriff's department in Macomb County, Mich.

The authorities said he had been chatting online for two weeks with an undercover detective who posed as a mother offering to let men have sex with her young daughter.

At the time of his arrest, the authorities said, Mr. Atchison, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., was carrying a Dora the Explorer doll, hoop earrings and petroleum jelly.

Maybe we should be looking at the recent cases he was prosecuting. Maybe he stepped on a few toes. If he did actually fly to Michigan to have sex with a five year old, we're better off without him.

Curious that his attorney would want charges to be dropped since he died and because he did a lot of good in his life. Does that mean he shouldn't have been accountable or make his intention any less sick? And should his name be less muddied because he did some good?

In a statement, his attorney said: "This is a man who has done a lot of good in his life. Unfortunately, he is going to be judged by his most recent charges and what we have read in the media, and not by the goodness, hard work or by the love of his family."

jeeeze! yeah, pretty much all good deeds in your life are rendered irrelevant once you start preying on 5 year olds as sexual partners.

this guy gives attorney's a bad name.

My grandma actually told me about this from the local news a while ago, I was just as ashamed then. Its just sick to think he was actually going to go through with it if it had been a real situation.         more accurately, if what he wrote was true...... he may of just said that to try to assure the mother...... who knows ?? it seems of others were going to come forward they would have done so by now.

        this raises an interesting perspective.... what if never did have sex with a child before and the sting operation raised the possibility with him ? what if he never did and never would absent the phony opportunity the sting provided.

        interesting.
